When you lose a tooth or have developed a more severe stage of periodontal disease, the supporting bone tissue of your jaw may begin to deteriorate and shrink, making your teeth unstable and increasing your risk of tooth loss. Our dentist can provide bone grafting to increase your bone density and help you begin the process of regaining your oral health and function. Bone grafting is typically recommended prior to implant placement to ensure that your implant and teeth remain stable in your mouth, though it may also be included as part of your periodontal treatments.
When you receive a bone graft, our dentist will take a piece of bone from a cadaver or animal bone, known as an allograft, and transplant it into the affected area. Your jawbone then integrates and grows together with the grafting bone tissue to create a stronger and more stable foundation. Artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank may also be used if needed.
We welcome you to call our office if you have any questions about bone grafting and to schedule your consultation with our dentist. We are committed to helping you regain your oral health and smile.
